A group of high school students in Alabama have apologised after taking a photo posed to look like they're standing on a black teenager.

The group of six Moody High School students posted the image on Snapchat, where it was captioned: "We got us one", CBS News reports.

It was taken during a dress up day and the students involved had dressed as cowboys.

The image quickly made its way across the local community and was derided as racist by many. Others said people took the image too seriously. The school said it took the image extremely seriously.

"It does not reflect the values of our school, our students, or our community. Notably, I also don't believe that the picture reflects the values of the students involved," principal Christopher Walters told AL.com.

He said the students involved would be disciplined appropriately.

The student being stood on, Nick Fuller, told CBS News thinking back on it now he should not have taken part in the photo.

"I didn't think about it when we first took the photos. I'd still like to say sorry again for anyone I offended," he said.

One of the students standing on Mr Fuller, Austin Glass, said he would not do it again.

"If I could go back, I wouldn't have [taken] the picture," he said. "I probably wouldn't have even dressed up for that day."
