An American restaurant has been getting lobsters 'high' before being cooked to try help alleviate their pain.

Charlotte's Legendary Lobster Pound in Seawell Maine is well known for its 'legendary' lobsters and has started 'hot-boxing' the crustacean with marijuana.

"I feel bad that when lobsters come here there is no exit strategy," owner Charlotte Gill told local media Mount Desert Islander.

Ms Gill first tried the technique on lobster Roscoe who was returned to the ocean as a reward after the test on him well.

He was placed in box filled with around two inches of water and marijuana smoke was pumped into the box 'baking' him.

Ms Gill says he seemed more calm after the experiment and entire method is a kind way to kill the lobster.

The restaurant holds a medical marijuana caregiver licence and Ms Gill grows her own marijuana plants.

"If we're going to take a life we have a responsibility to do it as humanely as possible," Ms Gill says.

Next year she hopes all lobsters will be sedated before being steamed and insists the process does not make the customer high.
