Australian man arrested over 'depraved' video showing him video running over emus

An Australian man has been arrested on charges of animal cruelty after posting a video on social media of himself mowing down a group of emus.

RSPCA New South Wales shared the video on its Facebook page on Thursday, begging any members of the public to help find the man.

Commenters on Facebook were outraged by the video.

"There are some seriously sick depraved people in this world," one person wrote. "So disgusting."

A breakthrough was made on Friday, and police arrested a 20-year-old farmhand on Friday afternoon near the South Australian border.

He's been charged with causing cruelty to an animal, destruction of protected wildlife and traffic offences. It's believed he was driving at 120km/h when he hit the birds.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA called the incident distressing.

"It's very distressing," spokesperson Cheryl Doudle said. "Even for seasoned inspectors. You don't often see something like that."

He will face court in November.
