Former United States President Barack Obama met four Australian Prime Ministers during his term, but there was one he didn't quite click with.

Between 2009 and 2016, he met former Labor leaders Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd, and former Liberal leaders Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull.

According to White House deputy national security adviser and foreign policy speechwriter Ben Rhodes, Mr Abbott was the only one Mr Obama didn't get along with.

Mr Rhodes told The Australian Mr Obama had a "very difficult" relationship with Mr Abbott due to their opposing views.

Mr Rhodes is currently promoting his new book The World As It Is, and said Mr Obama found Mr Turnbull easier to talk with.

Out of the four prime ministers, Mr Obama and Ms Gillard are viewed to have had the best relationship.

Sydney Morning Herald political commentator Michelle Grattan wrote their relationship was one of "professional easiness".
