BBC accidentally quotes Donald Trump saying 'war will follow'

The BBC has corrected a tweet that misquoted US President Donald Trump as saying "war will follow".

Mr Trump gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday morning in New York (local time).

Speaking about his decision to re-impose sanctions on Iran, who he accused of "slaughter in Syria and Yemen", he said "more will follow".

It appears a BBC staffer misheard that, tweeting that Mr Trump said "war will follow".

In a clarification the BBC said it was an "honest mistake" and the real words appeared to be "more will follow".

Mr Trump's speech attracted attention after leaders laughed at him boasting of his accomplishments as President.

"In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country," he said.

Muffled laughter could be heard, which got louder after he said "so true".

"I didn't expect that reaction but that's okay," he said, drawing even more laughter.
