Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered an ancient sphinx statue, believed to be from the Ptolemaic dynasty, which ruled from 305 to 30 BC.

The statue was found while draining water from the pharaonic temple of Kom Ombo near Aswan.

The Egyptian antiquities ministry said the statue of the mythical beast was made of sandstone, and measured around 28 cm wide and 38 cm high.

The sphinx was a representation of royal power in ancient Egypt, combining the power of a lion with the might of a king.

The ministry said it would investigate the sphinx further to uncover more about its purpose.
