Five people, including children, have been found dead at a home in Perth.

Officers arrived at the address on Coode St on Sunday morning (local time) after a man in his 20s visited a local police station. He is now in custody, but no charges have been laid.

It comes just months after Australia's worst shooting in 22 years, when four children and two adults were shot dead by Peter Miles before he turned the gun on himself.

Assistant Commissioner Metropolitan Region Paul Steel told local media on Sunday that women and children were among the dead, but could not confirm any of the victim's ages, genders or their relationships to one another.

Police are still trying to contact relatives of the dead.

Ass Comm Steel said forensic and homicide police were conducting a "meticulous" investigation into the crime scene, which could take several days to complete. The crime scene extends to a number of neighbouring streets, which have also been cordoned off.

It is unknown yet how long the bodies had been in the home.

Ass Comm Steel said the deaths had sent a "ripple" through the Western Australia community.

"This is a tragic event and it will no doubt have an impact - not only on the family and friends of the deceased, but for the whole of the community," he said.

"Those first responders who were faced with attending a scene with multiple deceased people."

Police say there are no concerns for public safety.
