Hurricane Florence begins to hit US coast

Hurricane Florence, described as the "storm of a lifetime" by one US weather outlet, is beginning to make landfall along America's east coast.

Despite being downgraded to a category 2 hurricane, Florence is still expected to being severe winds and a deluge of rainfall to the Carolina states and down into Georgia.

There are warnings in place for storm surges of up to four metres, compared to as the "second storey of a house" by North Carolina Governer Roy Cooper.

While the outer bands of the storm are beginnnig to hit coastal areas, the full brunt of the storm is due to hit later tonight.

As many as 800 flights in and out of airports in the region have been cancelled ahead of the storm.
