A mother in the US was arrested and faced jail time after she confiscated her daughter's phone.

Jodie May from Wisconsin said she was just being a concerned mum when she disciplined her 15-year-old daughter by taking away her iPhone 6, reports 7 News.

But that's ended up making her face jail time after her ex-husband laid a complaint with the Sheriff's office that he owned the mobile phone.

The man, who could not be named, accused Ms May of theft.

She was arrested by local police and faced a charge of larceny by conversion, which can be punishable with imprisonment.

But thanks to further investigations by Ottawa County, Michigan Assistant Prosecutor Sarah Matwiejczyk, it was found the phone did in fact belong to Ms May's daughter.

The charges were dismissed, with Ms May's lawyer calling the case not "thoroughly vetted".
