Pro-gay rights textbook stuns California conservatives

A history textbook for six- and seven-year-old schoolkids in California has angered conservatives, who are accusing it of promoting homosexuality.

The book features a picture of former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, calling him a "champion for people's rights".

"Gavin said that people could marry who they choose," the text reads. "Sometimes, Gavin helped marry people. Some marriages were not between a man and a woman. He made sure that people's rights were respected."

Greg Burt of the California Family Council, a Christian lobby group similar to New Zealand's Family First,  told CBS News he was stunned to see it.

"I want parents to be aware this is coming and I want them to go down and look at the curriculum for themselves."

The book is yet to be distributed to schools.
