Super Typhoon Jebi has lashed the coast of Japan, bringing heavy rain and reports of winds topping 170 kmph.

The storm brought down a railway station roof in Kyoto, while in Osaka it blew a tanker into a bridge.

Officials ordered the evacuation of more than one million people in affected areas.

Eight people have been confirmed dead with at least 160 injured.

Typhoon Jebi is the strongest storm to hit Japan since 1993, when a typhoon left 48 dead or missing.

Japan's weather agency has warned of possible landslides, flooding and violent winds as the storm sweeps across the country.
