'Stop Speciesism': Vegans held in France over attacks on Lille shops

  • 13/09/2018

Six people have been held this week in France over attacks by vegan activists on nine businesses.

The activists smashed windows and threw fake blood at a McDonald's restaurant, a butcher, fishmonger and cheese shop, among others, in the French city of Lille.

The slogan "Stop Speciesism" was spray-painted on one of the businesses, which appears to be a term condemning immoral treatment of other species.

One of the six people held, a 21-year-old woman, will appear in court in December, BBC reports.

But the other five activists detained have been, or will be, released.

The region has seen tensions rise after the French port city of Calais reportedly cancelled a planned vegan festival on 8 September upon learning meat-eaters were planning on "stirring up trouble".

The festival was ordered to go ahead by a court in Lille, however, after organisers of the event complained.

A survey conducted by Terra Eco in 2016 found that approximately three percent of French people were vegetarians, and about 10 percent of French people would consider becoming vegetarian.

A number of recent confrontations between vegans and non-vegans have sparked debate online.

In June, a group of vegan protesters in the UK were abused by a butcher who swung pieces of raw meat in their faces at a market in Leeds, video showed.

Many on social media expressed sympathy and support for the protesters, highlighting the "lack of respect" shown by the butcher.

"Disgusting vile excuse for men," one Facebook user commented.

Others hailed the group of protesters as "heroes", with one user telling Ms Lindstrom to not "let those ignorant idiots wind you up".

In May, butchers in the UK and Europe issued a plea for police protection following a spate of attacks from vegan activists.

It led to a group of French butchers asking for the interior minister to intervene, after "physical, verbal and moral" attacks from vegans and animal rights groups.

New Zealand meat-eaters represent 94 percent of the population, according to Health Navigator New Zealand.
