Loud gunfire and children's screams prompted police to swoop in, sirens blazing, on an eight-year-old's birthday party in the quiet UK village of Yaxham last weekend.

But they soon realised there was nothing to worry about - the children were screaming in fun, and the bullets were made of foam.

"I was in the kitchen making tea with some of the mums when one of them suddenly said 'Lisa, you have a squad car pulled up in your driveway,'" mother Lisa Green told UK media.

"I approached the officer and asked if there was a problem and they said they had been called following reports of machine guns going off in my garden.

"I told them that there were some guns, but they are only Nerf guns."

Her son Oliver and 18 of his friends were running around the yard, perhaps re-enacting scenes from hit online shooter Fortnite.

"I am the birthday boy officer, but I am not sure what I have done wrong," Oliver told the police.

Yaxham police later confirmed in a statement "no offences were committed".
