As Hurricane Florence charges towards the United States, President Donald Trump has given himself top marks for the work of his administration during last year's hurricane season.

Major hurricanes hit Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico last year, affecting millions.

"We got A Pluses for our recent hurricane work in Texas and Florida (and did an unappreciated great job in Puerto Rico, even though an inaccessible island with very poor electricity and a totally incompetent Mayor of San Juan). We are ready for the big one that is coming!" Mr Trump tweeted.

Nearly 3000 people died on Puerto Rico in the wake of Huirricane Maria, the Governor saying it caused "unprecedented devastation".

Hurricane Florence, described by the National Weather Service as the "storm of a lifetime", is expected to hit the US by the end of this week.

Latest developments estimate the hurricane will slow as it makes landfall, with the coasts of South and North Carolina expected to be among the worst-hit.
