A US teen has become the definition of a Good Samaritan after handing in a wallet containing US$10,000 that he found on the street.

Rhami Zeini found the wallet in the middle of the road on his way home from school on Wednesday in Santa Barbara, California.

The 16-year-old picked up the wallet, and when he opened it to look for identification, he discovered more money than he'd ever seen in his life.

After speaking to his parents, he handed the wallet in to his local police station, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

He told KCOY-TV it was simply "the right thing to do".

"If the roles were reversed and I had lost something with a significant sum of money inside, I know I would want it back for sure," he said.

The Sheriff's Office has praised Mr Zeini, saying that the owner was "very grateful" when they contacted her to return the wallet.

She told officers she believes the wallet was on the roof of the car when she drove away.

"Thank you Rhami for doing so many things right, from observing the purse in the first place, stopping to get it, contacting your parents for help and for turning it in," the Sheriff's Office said in a post on Facebook.

"Rhami said he was just doing what he would want someone else to do if he lost something valuable."

The woman has given Mr Zeini US$100 as a token of her appreciation.
