A 12th suspicious package has been intercepted in the US, as the mystery heightens over who is behind the attacks.

The latest package was intercepted at a mailing facility in the Midtown area of Manhattan, and was addressed to James Clapper.

Mr Clapper is a former Director of National Intelligience.

CNN is reporting that the package was addressed to CNN for Mr Clapper.

It comes just moments after an 11th package was intercepted  addressed to New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat.

The package was intercepted at the Florida mailing centre.

The latest packages follows a string of suspicious packages sent to prominent critics, or perceived critics, of US president Donald Trump.

Over the past days, Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, CNN, Joe Biden and Robert De Niro have had suspicious packages addressed to them intercepted.

No one has been injured, and none of the suspicious packages believed to be containing explosives have detonated.
