Donald Trump accused of belittling female reporters

US President Donald Trump has been accused of belittling female reporters after comments he made during a press conference on Monday (local time).

Mr Trump told ABC White House correspondent Cecilia Vega she was surprised he decided to answer her question and she wasn't thinking.

"She's shocked that I picked her, she's like in a state of shock," he said.

"No, I'm not. Thank you, Mr. President," Ms Vega responded.

"That's okay. I know you're not thinking. You never do," Mr Trump said.

Ms Vega was visibly taken aback and then tried to ask her question. Mr Trump refused to answer it as it was about an FBI investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused of sexual assault.

He eventually did respond to the question after allowing other reporters to ask their own questions about trade.

Ms Vega wasn't impressed though and tweeted in reference to the incident.

"A news conference means you get to ask whatever question you want to ask. #FirstAmendment," she wrote.

She wasn't the only reporter Mr Trump singled out on Monday. CNN's Kaitlan Collins also got the brush off when she pressed the President for answers about Mr Kavanaugh.

"You know what. You've had enough. You've really had enough," he said, interrupting her in the process.

The Washington Post called the incident notable considering the timing around Mr Kavanaugh's investigation.

"Belittling women in those terms is standard Trump practice," reporter Amber Phillips wrote.

"The unprompted way he did it Monday is especially notable, given that Republicans are coming off a week of criticism for moving forward with a Supreme Court nominee accused of sexual assault  a nominee Trump spent a significant chunk of time Monday defending."
