Donald Trump wants to end birthright citizenship in the US

US President Donald Trump has revealed his latest measure to tighten immigration in the US, by banning birthright citizenship to babies born in the US to non-citizens.

"We're the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States," Trump told Axios.

"It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous and it has to end."

Mr Trump added that the move was in the process and he would complete it by signing an executive order.

However, it may not be so easy for the president, with opponents likely to refer him to the US Constitution on the matter.

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State where they reside," reads the Constitution's 14th Amendment.

The move comes as Mr Trump ramps up his hard-line immigration stance ahead of next week's mid-term elections.

Earlier in the week he announced he was deploying more than 5,000 US military personnel at the US-Mexico border as a migrant caravan continues to trek north through Central America.
