Fitbit data leads to 90yo US man's murder arrest

Fitbit data has led to a 90-year-old California man's arrest over the death of his stepdaughter.

Anthony Vincent Aiello has been charged over the killing of Karen Navarra, who was found dead inside her home in September.

Authorities initially believed her death was suicide, but an autopsy soon revealed Ms Navarra's "suicide" was staged.

She had "multiple deep and intrusive wounds" to her face and head, skull fractures and a "gaping" slit to her neck.

Security footage showed Aiello's vehicle had parked at his stepdaughter's house. However he claimed he had visited to drop off pizza then left. Later that day he said he'd seen her driving past his home.

"He denied that he was present when she was killed and suggested that someone else might have been in the house," court records stated.

But security footage showed Ms Navarra's car hadn't left her house and data from her Fitbit showed her heartbeat spiked at the same time Aiello visited her house. Just minutes later her heartbeat stopped.

Aiello is currently being held without bond.
