'He was devastated': Father's 'rage' after 5yo son bullied for wearing nail polish

A US father has written an impassioned defence of his son after he was bullied for wearing nail polish.

Blogger Aaron Gouveia, known as Daddy Files on Twitter, posted a thread on Wednesday (NZ time) explaining how his son Sam was bullied by everyone at his kindergarten for sporting red nail polish.

"He's rough and tumble, he's loud, he's always dirty," said Mr Gouveia, "but he also loves a lot of girl things."

He said Sam decided to wear his nail polish to kindy because he thought they were "beautiful," but explains his classmates "ridiculed Sam for being a boy with nail polish".

"He was devastated at how other kids turned on him, even his friends... When my wife picked him up from school he collapsed into her arms and cried uncontrollably."

Mr Gouveia said the problem was with learned "toxic masculinity" and that this was a behaviour "learned most of the time from parents."

He explained that Sam wanted to take the polish off, but after his brother Will decided to paint his nails too, realised he wanted to keep his "beautiful" nail polish.

"After careful consideration, he's leaving it on. Because he likes it and it makes him feel good," Mr Gouveia said.

"Be brave and shine bright, my beautiful polished boy... know that mom and dad always have your back."
