Horrifying video shows escalator malfunctioning, injuring 30 in Rome

Thirty people have been injured after an escalator overcrowded with football fans malfunctioned in Rome.

The incident took place at the Repubblica underground station and Italian media reported CSK Moscow fans were singing and jumping up and down on the escalator, causing it to malfunction.

Part of it collapsed and the fans fell on top of each other as the escalator operated out of control.

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, six people were seriously injured - including one who had part of their foot ripped off in the carnage.

A local police spokesperson told the paper that fans were "singing and jumping" on the escalator prior to the collapse.

One person said the carnage was like a "scene from the apocalypse" as 17 people were taken to hospital.

The incident occurred before CSKA Moscow's UEFA Champions League clash against Roma.
