At 182 metres high, India's tribute to independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stands at the largest in the world.

The structure, in the state of Gujarat, cost more than NZ$500m to build.

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi believed the statue would serve as a tourist attraction for the area.

The 'Statue of Unity' weighs around 67,000 tonnes and occupies more than 20,000 square metres.

At 182 metres it is almost double the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York City, and more than 50m higher than the next tallest statue in the world, the Spring Temple Buddha in China.

However, it’s not expected to last atop the standings, with the government in the Indian state of Maharashtra constructing a 190m memorial to Maratha warrior King Shivaji.
