The killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi was "planned days in advance", says Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan.

Mr Erdogan also called the killing "savage" when speaking with MPs from his ruling party.

Saudi Arabia has provided conflicting reports of what happened to the Washington Post columnist, at first denying any responsibility before later admitting Mr Khashoggi died in a fight at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The latest word from the Saudi government is that Mr Khashoggi died in a "rogue" operation, but that the government had no knowledge of it.

Mr Erdogan has called on Saudi Arabia to provide answers on who ordered the operation, and for the suspects to be tried in Istanbul.

"My demand is that 18 people be tried in Istanbul," Mr Erdogan said, citing 15 suspects who flew to Istanbul for the operation plus three consular officials.

King Salman of Saudi Arabia said at a cabinet meeting today that the country would hold to account those responsible for the killing, but did not offer any knowledge of who they were.

Today also marks the first day of an investment conference taking place in Saudi Arabia.

It's been overshadowed by the Khashoggi case with many world leaders pulling out of attending the conference.
