Las Vegas police to reopen Cristiano Ronaldo rape case

Las Vegas police have reopened a sexual assault investigation from 2009 into Cristiano Ronaldo at the request of a woman who alleges she was raped by the footballer.

Kathryn Mayorga says she was attacked by the Juventus and Portugal striker in a hotel room in Vegas that year.

Mr Ronaldo, a five-time World Player of the Year, has dismissed the claims as "fake news".

German magazine Der Spiegel reported that Ms Mayorga filed a report with police shortly after the alleged incident.

It's also been reported that in 2010, she reached a settlement with Mr Ronaldo to be paid NZ$568,000 to never make public the allegations.

Her lawyers are seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement as void.

"At the time the report was taken [in 2009], the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description," a Las Vegas police statement read.

"As of September 2018, the case has been reopened and our detectives are following up on information being provided."

Mr Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid earlier this year, and also played for Manchester United over the course of his illustrious career.
