Melania Trump admits telling Donald to stop tweeting

Melania Trump has admitted telling her husband, US President Donald Trump, to put the phone down and stop tweeting.

Mr Trump uses Twitter unlike any other world leader. In addition to the usual announcements and platitudes expressed by most politicians, he uses the site to call his opponents names, spread unfounded conspiracy theories and even fire staff he no longer wants.

Ms Trump, currently touring Africa, told reporters she tells him when he's overstepped the mark.

"I don't always agree with what he tweets, and I tell him that," she told reporters in Egypt.

"I give my honest opinion and honest advice. Sometimes he listens and sometimes he doesn't, but I have my own voice and opinions, and it's very important to me I express what I feel."

Asked if she was trying to "scare" him into being more polite, she said no.

"I'm not elected - he's the President."

Asked if she'd ever told him to stop tweeting, she laughed and said "yes".

Ms Trump has campaigned against cyber bullying. Mr Trump, on the other hand, has arguably broken Twitter's rules so many times, the site's bosses had to publicly explain why they haven't blocked him from using the service.

His account was temporarily taken offline last year by a contractor on their last day.
