Michelle Obama's calls George W Bush her 'partner in crime'

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has a presidential "partner in crime", but it's not the former President you would think.

In an interview with NBC, Ms Obama said due to seating protocol at formal events, former President George W Bush and she were "forever seatmates".

"He is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the formers gather," Ms Obama said. "He's a wonderful man. He's a funny man."

Ms Obama said their friendship defies their opposite political alignments - Mr Bush a Republican, she a Democrat.

The unlikely alliance made headlines earlier this year when footage emerged of Mr Bush giving Ms Obama a cough drop at the funeral of Senator John McCain.

Ms Obama said she did not realise the moment would be as widely shared as it was.

"I will add that they were old cough drops," she said, describing the official White House box they were in. "I was like, 'How long have you had these?' He said, 'A long time.'"
