With the aid of around 200,000 social media users, the photographer who took the viral shot of a Yosemite proposal has identified the couple at the centre of the snap.

Matthew Dippel captured a stunning proposal as the sun set on the famous Taft Point viewpoint - a popular spot for photos.

The photo went viral, but because of the distance between where Mr Dippel was positioned and the subjects of his photo he was unable to identify them.

After more than 200,000 people shared the story on social media, and multiple news networks picked up on the story Mr Dippel was able to track them down.

"Everyone meet, Charlie Bear and his fiance Melissa, the happy, happy couple that was out on the point in my Taft Point Proposal," Mr Dippel wrote in a post on Twitter.

Mr Bear said he was totally unaware of the situation.

"I stumbled across our picture being posted and I was like 'holy crap that's us'," Mr Bear told FOX17.
