The US Geological Survey may be looking to lift its internet security after a discovery that its networks had been infected with malware from pornography sites.

An investigation into the source of the malware traced it back to a single employee, who reportedly used a government-issued computer to visit 9,000 adult video sites.

Many of the sites were liked to Russia websites containing malware which found its way onto the government computers and was used to gain entry to the USGS networks.

The investigation also found the employee's cellphone was infiltrated with the malware.

It is a breach of the department's code of behaviour to use government property to view pornography and the employee, who was not named, no longer works at the agency.
