Sir Richard Branson says Virgin Galactic is "weeks away" from sending a rocket into space, and that his space tourism firm will take passengers "not too long after that", according to a CNBC interview.

Virgin Galactic will charge passengers around $387,000 for a seat on the flight.

Sir Richard is in a race with Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk of SpaceX to be the first to send tourists into space.

Virgin Galactic has previously said it would look to launch an inaugral commercial flight into space in 2019.

The flight would involve tourists spending several minutes floating in zero gravity in a spaceship that approaches or passes the Earth's atmosphere, some 100km above land.
