A powerful quake has struck east of Papua New Guinea.

USGS reports it measured magnitude 7, striking just off the southern coast of the island of New Britain at 9:48am (NZ time). It was 33km deep. Initial reports had it at magnitude 7.3.

The quake was preceded by two smaller shakes measuring 5.3 and 5.4 the day before, striking the Papua New Guinea mainland.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves up to 30cm high were possible along the Papua New Guinea coast and the Solomon Islands.

Civil Defence said there was no tsunami threat to New Zealand.

A 7.5 quake hit Papua New Guinea in February. A 6.7 aftershock in March killed at least 25 people.
