Sydney's same-sex penguin couple becomes proud parents

Sydney Aquarium's same-sex penguin couple, which stole the hearts of people across the world, have welcomed their own baby chick.

Sphen and Magic's bundle of joy was born on Friday, October 19, weighing 91 grams - the equivalent of two apples.

The couple was originally given a mock egg to look after so they weren't left out during mating season.

Much to the joy of the Sea life Aquarium staff, the couple proved to be natural parents and they were gifted a foster egg to raise of their own.

Two weeks later the egg hatched, waddling into the history books as the attraction's first sub-Antarctic penguin born since the colony was opened in November 2016.

Tish Hannan, penguin department supervisor at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, says the parents are doing very well looking after the yet-to-be-named baby chick.

"With that said, the first 20 days of a penguin chick's life are the most vulnerable so it is extra important the chick is very happy, healthy and well-fed by his parents."

The incubation of Gentoo penguins takes 36 days usually, and an additional three days for the chick to 'pip' its beak out of the egg.

Now the chick will stay with its dads for up to six weeks and will be fed 10 times a day. When it's big enough it will begin swimming lessons.

The chick will also hold a big job for the aquarium of being an ambassador for Gentoo penguins, helping the public understand the difficult conditions the beloved species faces in the wild.
