A small yet important island in Hawaii has been literally wiped off the map following Hurricane Walaka.

East Island, a four hectare island, doesn't have any people but is the nesting place for endangered Hawaiian green sea turtles.

The Honolulu Civil Beat estimated that around 96 percent of the species nest in the French Frigate Shoals, half of which are on East Island.

Due to the timing of the category 4 hurricane, most of the turtles are believed to have already left the island by the time the storm came around.

East Island was located to the northwest of the main islands of Hawaii, and experts say the chances of the island eventually reappearing are remote.
