Woman badly bruised sheltering baby from tennis ball-sized hail

A Queensland woman has been left severely bruised after tennis ball-sized hailstones smashed through her car windows.

Fiona Simpson was driving with her grandmother and baby in Kingaroy, a small town northwest of Brisbane when the storm hit, 9 News reports.

Ms Simpson sheltered her baby as the windows blew out and the hail pelted her on her arms, back and head, leaving her badly bruised.

"I've learnt my lesson, never drive in a hail storm," she said in a post on Facebook.

The storm affected an area of around 400km, tearing apart towns in southeast Queensland and leaving many residents in the region with no power for more than 12 hours.

Many farmers in the region said entire crops have been wiped out.
