An 82 year old woman in Texas has died just days after casting her first ever vote.

Gracie Lou Phillips was fighting pneumonia and decided to cast an early vote in the Texas midterm election after being moved to hospice care.

Her family told a local NBC tv station that family life and misconceptions about voting had stopped Ms Phillips voting in the past.

Ms Phillips finally registered to vote for the first time in her life last week, before heading down to the polling station to cast an early vote as she was transitioned to hospice care.

"My aunt took her with her portable oxygen tank," her granddaughter Michelle told NBC.

"Poll people were very kind, they met her out at her car."

Her family says they hope the story inspires others to head to the polls on election day.
