White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is facing a backlash after accusations she released a doctored video of an exchange between CNN journalist Jim Acosta and a White House intern during President Donald Trump's post-midterms press conference.

Ms Sanders shared the video on her Twitter feed in an attempt to justify the White House's decision to revoke Mr Acosta's press credential.

Mr Acosta's exchange with the aide is cited as the reason behind the decision to revoke his credentials.

During the press conference, and following a heated exchange between Mr Trump and Mr Acosta, the aide attempts to take the microphone off Mr Acosta but he refuses to let go.

Video shows the CNN reporter's arm brushing the aide's arm.

"We will ... never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job," Ms Sanders tweeted after the exchange.

CNN has responded to the accusations, while some social media users pointed out the video was one edited by Infowars, the website of right-wing conspiracy therorist Alex Jones.

The users say the video was sped up to make the exchange look more violent than it was.

In a tweet, CNN's VP of Communications called Ms Sanders' actions "shameful".

"You released a doctored video - actual fake news. History will not be kind to you."
