Dogs are being trained to intervene in school shootings in the United States in absence of other measures to reduce them.

There have been 313 mass shootings in 2018 so far, according to the Gun Violence Archive, and companies are touting their shooting defence dogs as the answer.

The dogs are trained to track down the shooter and attack them, ending the shooting.

Companies training the dogs have been around since at least 2014, according to WCPO Cincinnati.

At the time an attack dog trainer said the dogs are good in an active shooter situation because they're less likely to be deterred like a human would.

"You can train a dog to be mentally unstoppable," trainer Mark Gomer told WCPO.  "They don't know what a gun is for, what it can do or what a bullet is or what it is to get shot."

The idea has become popular again after business and tech site Cheddar posted a video to Twitter showing a defence dog in action.

Some replies were in favour of the dog, but not everyone is a fan.

"At least someone is trying something to come up with a solution, don't knock them for trying what ideas have y'all come up with and put into action?... Dogs are smart as hell and CAN be trained to identify someone with a gun in their hands," one person wrote.

"You know America is f**ked when DOGS are being trained to take down a shooter. Mass shootings shouldn't even be a thing," another said.
