Hillary Clinton will run for president again, former adviser says

Hillary Clinton is all but certain to run for president again in 2020, a former adviser says.

Mark Penn, the former Clinton administration political adviser and 2008 Hillary Clinton campaign manager, says Ms Clinton has "an unfinished mission to be the first female president" and a "personal grievance" against Donald Trump.

"She will not allow this humiliating loss at the hands of an amateur to end the story of her career," Mr Penn wrote in a Wall Street Journal article co-authored by former Democrat politician Andrew Stein.

Rumours of Ms Clinton's potential 2020 presidential bid appeared last month when she hinted at it during an event in New York. When pressed on the issue by journalist Kara Swisher, Ms Clinton said she'd "like to be president".

"I'm not even going to even think about it 'til we get through this November 6 election about what's going to happen after that," she said. "But I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure we have a Democrat in the White House come January of 2021."

"You can expect her to run for president once again," said Mr Penn and Mr Stein in their Wall Street Journal article. "Maybe not at first, when the legions of Senate Democrats make their announcements, but definitely by the time the primaries are in full swing."

Ms Clinton, a former secretary of state, could "easily" capture the Democratic nomination, the article says. Ms Clinton could reinvent herself, it adds, saying she will "hope to emerge as an unstoppable force to undo Mr Trump".

Ms Clinton and Mr Trump went head-to-head in the 2016 US presidential election. During a debate, Mr Trump called Ms Clinton a "nasty woman" and she retorted by claiming Mr Trump does not pay any tax.

Mr Trump also vowed to imprison Ms Clinton over her email scandal, before emerging victorious. It ignited the infamous "locker her up" chants at Mr Trump's rallies.

Mr Penn and Mr Stein say people shouldn't pay attention to Ms Clinton claiming she won't run again for president. They said she and former president Barack Obama both declared they weren't running "until they ran".

Ms Clinton's surprise loss to Mr Trump in 2016 sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party. But Mr Penn and Mr Stein say two years of reflection could strengthen and put Ms Clinton in the best position to take Mr Trump on again.

"Expect Hillary 4.0 to come out swinging."
