A high school student in France has injected himself with a home-made DNA sequence, constructed from parts of the Bible and the Koran.

Adrien Locatelli translated the religious passages into DNA code to build unknown proteins which he then injected into his body.

In his report published online, Mr Locatelli writes "since it is possible to convert digital information into DNA, I wondered whether it would be possible to convert a religious text into DNA and to inject it into a living being."

Mr Locatelli replaced every Hebrew character in the Book of Genesis with DNA code, excluding 2:10 to 2:14 and 7:1 to 7:5 because he says they were "controversial".

He also replaced every Arabic letter from the 13th chapter of the Koran with assisted nucleotides.

After translating the religious texts, the high-school student built the proteins in a lab and injected them into his legs.

Despite potentially fatal consequences for injecting an unknown substance into his body Mr Locatelli reports only "a minor inflammation which persisted a few days" at the injection site.

Mr Locatelli claims that this experiment is the first of its kind, and that it was "very symbolic even if it does not have much interest".
