Grace Millane: GoFundMe page set up by university friends

A GoFundMe page has been set up in honour of slain backpacker Grace Millane, with some of its proceeds going towards a trust that supports British nationals in crisis overseas.

Police found Ms Millane's body in the Waitakere Ranges on Sunday. They began searching for her when a missing person's report was filed, after she failed to check in with her family on her birthday on December 2.

The GoFundMe page has been set up by the hockey club Ms Millane's played for at the University of Lincoln.

The University of Lincoln Hockey Club will donate the proceeds to a Lincolnshire-based cancer society and the Lucie Blackman Trust, a charity that supports families of British nationals killed overseas.

So far, the page has raised over NZ$6000, with people donating from all over the world.

"I donated because I live in NZ and I am devastated to think that such a beautiful young girl has been tragically taken from her family this Christmas," one person wrote.

Her brother Declan has endorsed the page, sharing it on his personal Facebook account.

Ms Millane was last seen alive entering the CityLife hotel on Queen St at 9:41pm on December 1.

A 26-year-old man appeared in the Auckland District Court on Monday, charged with her murder. The accused has been granted interim name suppression.

Vigils are being held across the country on Wednesday and in the coming days - you can find out where your nearest one is here.

Police are in the process of organising the transfer of Ms Millane home to England in the next few days.
