North Korea's iconic broadcaster, 'pink lady' off air as state targets more modern look

She's a figure most North Koreans have grown up watching on state television, but the iconic 'pink lady' has not been seen on screens for a while.

Ri Chun-hee, was given the nickname "pink lady" after the distinctive traditional pink Hanbok dress she wore during reports.

She has been the face of the state for decades, announcing key historical developments for the country such as the testing of nuclear weapons.

She also announced the deaths of leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong-il, during which she openly wept, a passionate tone she carried through much of her time as a broadcaster.

Ms Ri retired in 2012 but, after four years, came out of retirement to announce North Korea's (claimed) successful detonation of a Hydrogen bomb in January 2016.

But the Telegraph reports the 75-year-old no longer fits with the new 'modern' image that the country's leader Kim Jong-un wants.

According to ABC news, the new generation of anchors and reporters have mostly ditched the traditional newsreader approach to telling stories, moving toward more field-reporting.

This is all part of a move towards a better perception of living conditions in the country, ABC said recent news has included footage of students on cell phones and people eating pizza.

However, messages of love and support for Dictator Kim Jong-un have not been diluted, interviewees still making sure to express their gratitude at every opportunity.
