A young man from Perth has died after being crushed by bricks while relaxing in a hammock.

Jake East, 22, was reclining in the hammock with his girlfriend Carley Kempton at a house party when tragedy struck, reports 7 News.

At 12:30am on Sunday the pillar supporting the hammock collapsed on top of the couple.

Mr East, struck with the majority of the weight, suffered critical internal injuries. He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital and taken into intensive care, but died later that day.

Ms Kempton was also taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

The brick pillar, supporting a pergola, made such a loud noise when it came down neighbours from the surrounding houses rushed out.

"I went out to the lawn, thinking it was maybe an intruder and then the music was shut off," neighbour Ben Reynolds told 7 News.

"It's pretty unlucky…a pretty tragic story really."

Mr East's aunt took to Facebook to express her grief.

"You had the whole world at your feet and it was so tragically taken away. Your family are in a world of pain and we will never be the same".

Mr East's death is being investigated by police for the coroner, and the hammock has been taken as evidence.
