An American hunter has been ordered to repeatedly watch the movie Bambi as a part of his prison sentence for illegally poaching and killing hundreds of deer.

David Berry Jr, 29, was sentenced to a year in jail for his part in killing hundreds of deer over the last decade in the fields and forests of southern Missouri.

A part of his sentence, Lawerence Judge Robert George ordered Berry Jnr to watch Bambi once a month while in prison.

The famous Disney movie has an iconic scene that traumatised children for generations, where a hunter shoots baby Bambi's mother.

"Bambi, quick. The thicket," she urges as the two try to sprint to safety as gunshots go off around them.

"Faster! Faster, Bambi! Don't look back! Keep running! Keep running!"

Words Berry Jr will soon become familiar with.

"Taking just the heads is their version of obtaining a 'trophy' and leaving the carcass behind is merely an afterthought," Randy Doman, the division chief of the Missouri Department of Conservation, told the Springfield News-Leader.

It is unknown exactly how many deer Berry Jr and his accomplices have killed but it is believed to be several hundred.
