A man from the UK has been filmed throwing takeaways in the face of a homeless man while on a night out.

The incident occurred in the Derby city centre at around 2am on Sunday (local time) outside a takeaway shop, Derbyshire Live reports.

Adam Thorpe claims he didn't believe the man, who was asking passers-by for change, was homeless and that prompted him to attack.

Mr Thorpe threw a box filled with hot chips and kebab meat directly into the man's face, sending him stumbling backwards.

The 29-year-old told Derbyshire Live he now regrets what he did and claims he offered the homeless man £10 after the incident.

"I felt so bad for what I did afterwards and I spent ages the next day and the day after trying to find him to say I was sorry," he said.

"I looked all around the centre of Derby trying to find him, but I couldn't. If I thought that he was homeless, I never would have done it. I wish I could take it back."

Video of the incident has gone viral on Facebook and been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

Commenters have shared their disgust and outrage at Mr Thorpe's actions, which have been labelled cruel.

"Instead of trying to find the idiot who did this, can someone please tell me the homeless guy's name and where he lives on the street so I can buy him some food?" one person wrote.

"Why would you even do that to someone? And recording as well? Instead of slapping food in his face, why don't you give him money or buy him food?" another said.
