Heart-warming photographs posted to Facebook show a homeless man's six dogs waiting patiently outside the hospital for him to emerge.

The Brazilian man, identified by local media as Luiz, was taken to hospital on Wednesday after he had a stroke.

According to the local newspaper, G1, his six dogs ran after the ambulance he was in to the hospital.

Outside the hospital, after howling for their master, they lay on the pavement and waited.

An animal welfare volunteer from the organisation Amigos de Patas Cianorte, spoke to G1 and said that the dogs waited even after Luiz was discharged a day later.

"When Luiz was discharged and left with his brother through another door, the dogs remained at the hospital entrance."

The organisation had to take measure to ensure that the dogs found their master "One of the volunteers had to go and fetch Luiz at his brother's house, and take him to where the dogs were waiting for them to leave the front".

G1 reports that Luiz has been homeless for 20 years, and considers the six loyal pooches to be his family.
