A Canadian man who took up two seats on a rescue plane as he was evacuated from one of Alberta's worst wildfires has lost an astounding 151 kilograms.

At his heaviest, Tony Bussey, 43, weighed 257 kilograms and couldn't reach over his stomach to put on his socks.

He was evacuated during the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires and his evacuation was the push he needed to lose weight.

"The evacuation was my 'enough' moment," he told CTV News Canada.

"When they put us on the bus I was spilling over into the next seat, so much so that they couldn't even put a person next to me.

"You've got a line-up of people waiting to come on the bus and they couldn't get on because I'm taking up two seats. And then when I get on the plane, same thing."

Mr Bussey told CTV News he cut out processed sugar, breads, pasta and eating late at night.

Looking back at pictures of him at his heaviest, Mr Bussey said he saw despair and sadness.

"All the years of being overweight, bad decisions, bad eating, bad habits of basically just lying on a couch, wasting my life away, I had enough.

"Life is too beautiful to be wasted on a couch. At that size you're eating yourself into an early grave."

Mr Bussey said by sharing his story he hoped to inspire others.
