A man in Taiwan has been fined for sending a cat through the post.

The 33-year-old man was fined nearly $3000 for violating the Taiwan Animal Protection Act, after he posted the cat in a sealed cardboard box to a local animal shelter, according to local reports.

He was also fined an additional $1500 because staff at the centre found that the cat had not been vaccinated for rabies.

"An animal can suffocate in an insufficiently ventilated container, has no access to clean water and can become distressed," said a spokesperson for Taiwan's Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office.

The cat was a Scottish fold, a breed with ears that bend forwards.
