An Illinois man has been charged with the death of his girlfriend's daughter after he beat her because she spilt juice on his Xbox.

Skylar Mendez, 4, spilt juice on an Xbox while she was home with 19-year-old Johnathan Fair, The Chicago Tribune reports.

The Lake County State Attorney Office says Fair punished Skylar by allegedly beating her and kicking her down the hallway of the house after the incident on December 13.

She passed out and Fair took her to hospital and told doctors differing stories of what happened. She later died in hospital despite doctors operating on her to relieve swelling from her brain.

He has been charged with four counts of first degree murder and is being held in custody at Lake County Jail. The bond for his bail is US$5 million.

If convicted, he could face life in prison. Prosecutors are reportedly seeking a natural life sentence.

He is scheduled to appear in court on February 17.
