Australian Federal Police are responding to reports of suspicious packages sent to several consulates across Melbourne.

It's understood the New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom, German, Indian and Swiss consulates have been affected, 7 News reports.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) confirmed the New Zealand Consulate General in Melbourne received a suspicious parcel on Wednesday afternoon.

Staff were evacuated from the Consulate as a precautionary measure and the Melbourne Fire Department and Australian Federal Police are investigating.

Newshub's Mitch McCann says not much is known so far about the suspicious packages, but there are reports in Australia that they contain the words "asbestos" on the outside of them.
