Porn star Cherie DeVille's US presidential campaign fizzles, blames Stormy Daniels

A US porn star has ended her 2020 presidential campaign, blaming fellow adult film star Stormy Daniels after it failed to get traction.

Cherie DeVille, 40, launched her campaign way ahead of other Democrat candidates 17 months ago, under the slogan "Make America F***ing Awesome Again".

Due to a lack of support, she ended her endeavour, citing a lack of support for a campaign that tried to combine opposition to Donald Trump, and similar views to 2016 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

The adult film star, whose real name is Carolyn Paparozzi, told The Washington Examiner the originality of her campaign may have been squashed because of President Trump's alleged fling with porn actress Stormy Daniels.

"I wonder if that hurt the legitimacy of my campaign, as if, 'Oh, there's another porn girl trying to get into the political sphere'," she said.

Ms Daniels, 39, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claimed Mr Trump paid her off to keep their affair a secret.  She says said she slept with him during a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, California, in 2006.

She cited a 2011 incident in which she claimed a man threatened her in a parking lot not to talk about the affair, which Mr Trump denied. But his former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to making payments to her that violated campaign finance law.

While Ms DeVille speculated the alleged affair destroyed her campaign's credibility, she said her campaign was also pulled because of abuse she received.

"People got crazy, mean, violent... perhaps that happens to all political candidates... but I don't have the money for bodyguards," she told the US political website.

"I even had people tell me it was a sign of the fact the US was moving forward in a negative way and that they would end that. People with those feelings about pornography are very serious, very serious about how they feel."

Now that her campaign has ended, the porn star said the only other candidate she could vote for from one of the big parties is her "love", Democrat Bernie Sanders.

But she hasn't lost hope: "Maybe as the cultural climate changes I can try again."
