At least eight people have been injured after a van rammed into pedestrians on a street in central Tokyo.

Pedestrians had gathered for New Year's festivities on Takeshita Dori, a popular tourist hotspot, when the car ploughed into people.

Footage from the scene shows the entire front-end of the small van was destroyed in the brutal crash.

A man in his 20s has been arrested and will reportedly face charges of attempted murder.

Local police told media the man is suspected of intentionally trying to kill people by driving the car through the street.

Takeshita Dori is a road that runs by the Meiji Shrine in Harajuku, which runs an all-night train on New Year's Eve for people wanting to mark the occasion with a visit to the shrine, according to the Associated Press.
